National Grandparents Day Quotes, Poems, Gifts, Famous Sayings Celebrating Grandparents

National Grandparents Day this year falls on Sunday, September 12, 2010, the first Sunday after Labor Day. Celebrating Grandparents Day with kids and grandchildren is a special September holiday celebrated primarily in the U.S and Canada.

Grandparents Day poems about grandmas and grandpa sayings, kind and thoughtful gift giving, sharing humorous quotes and eating a meal together, are just some ways kids and families celebrate this special holiday for grandparents. Playing cards games or board games, enjoying fun indoor or outdoor activities together at a park, are some popular things to do on Grandparents Day.

“If I knew it was going to be this much fun, I would have become a grandparent first.” Willard Scott

A Woman Should Have Poem – Not by Maya Angelou

A Woman Should Have

The very popular poem entitled A Woman Should Have has been attributed to Maya Angelou as author for a very long time as “Maya Angelou’s Best Poem Ever”, but as much as this delightful poem seems like the works of Maya Angelou, this poem below is not her work.

Maya Angelou herself has even denied authorship of A Woman Should Have on her official website, and Snopes.com has done its best to clear up any misconceptions of who wrote A Woman Should Have too, but the tall tales continue.

The real author of this wonderful poem about women is none other than Pamela Redmond Satran, and the original poem was entitled “30 Things Every Woman Should Have & Should Know By The Time She’s 30”, where the list of 30 things appeared under her byline in Glamour Magazine in May of 1997.

Still I Rise Poem by Maya Angelou

Still I RiseMaya Angelou is probably my favorite poet of all time, and her famous poem entitled Still I Rise may very well be my favorite poem by Maya Angelou, over and above all other poems. The Do It Anyway poem posted the other day is another one of my favorites, probably because poems like Still I Rise and Do It Anyway express in words and tone my way of thinking and feeling about life and adversities that don’t include the more “colorful language” that would inevitably rise up out of my mouth in certain situations.

For example, Grandpa forwarded an email video clip of a song entitled “I’m About to Whip Somebody’s Ass” to me a few days ago, and after listening to the little song clip and viewing the cartoon character singing the little ditty, we shared a good laugh together simply because of the comical and oh-so colorful song title. Too funny. The song is on Youtube if you’re interested.

    Do good anyway.
  3. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies.
    Succeed anyway.
  4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
    Do good anyway.

Celebrate Grandparents Day – How to Celebrate National Grandparents Day

Celebrate Grandparents DayDid you celebrate Grandparents Day this year? This year, 2009, marked the 30th anniversary of National Grandparents Day on Sunday, September 13th. According to a recent poll, millions of Americans and Canadians are said to have celebrated Grandparents Day and it made me wonder if the holiday celebrating grandparents is getting the attention it deserves.

Do you celebrate Grandparents Day? What things did you do to celebrate and honor your grandparents or great-grandparents on or near Grandparents Day? Did you visit your grandparents, send them a card, play games, take part in any activities or buy your grandparents a gift at all? It’s common for preschool and elementary schools in the U.S. to participate in making arts and crafts for grandparents, sing songs for and about grandparents, and some grandparents visit their grandchild’s school on the holiday.

Another poll about Grandparents Day showed that many adults have never heard of Grandparents day, don’t know anything about its origin and history, and don’t even know when Grandparents Day is observed. So, when is Grandparents Day and why do we celebrate National Grandparents Day in the first place?

Grandmother Poems – Poems About Grandma

GrandmaGrandmother poems for and about Grandma’s are a real treasure to be enjoyed and shared throughout the generations. Here is a collection of some of the best Grandma Poems on the web.

If you enjoy reading Nana Poems, Grandma and Grandpa quotes, or those commonly referred to as funeral poems or missing grandma poems like the rest of us do, you will surely enjoy these.

“As My Mother Mothers Me”

Grandmothers are mothers who are grand,
Restoring the sense that our most precious things
Are those that do not change much over time.
No love of childhood is more sublime,
Demanding little, giving on demand,
More inclined than most to grant the wings
On which we fly off to enchanted lands.
Though grandmothers must serve as second mothers,
Helping out with young and restless hearts,
Each has all the patience wisdom brings,
Remembering our passions more than others,
Soothing us with old and well-honed arts.
